Who I work with

Built for people
always at sea.

Yacht crew

Deck, engineering, interior, officers. Racing, charter, private. The SED was designed for exactly this — and I know the rules inside out.

All seafarers

Merchant navy, ferries, offshore support vessels. The SED applies across maritime work — not just yachts. If you're at sea and UK-taxed, let's talk.

Ask Sophie

Seafarers' Earnings
Deduction.

If you qualify, the SED means zero UK income tax on your seafaring earnings. Most crew don't claim it — either because nobody told them, or the paperwork seemed too hard. That's money left on the table.

01

Work on a ship

Your duties must be performed on a ship. Yachts qualify. Offshore installations (platforms, drillships, FPSOs) are specifically excluded by HMRC — even when moving between locations.

02

At least one foreign port

Each tax year, at least one voyage must begin or end outside the UK. One qualifying voyage is enough. The UK sector of the North Sea counts as UK waters.

03

365+ day eligible period

You need at least 365 days outside the UK — a day counts if you're not in the UK at midnight. You can come home, but no single visit can exceed 183 consecutive days, and UK days must never exceed half your total days abroad.

This is the half-day rule — I'll calculate it for you.
04

UK tax resident

You must be UK tax resident. EEA residents employed by UK companies may also qualify via form R43M(SED). Royal Navy don't qualify — Royal Fleet Auxiliary does.

Missed years? HMRC allows amendments going back four years. Every year you haven't claimed is a potential refund sitting uncollected. Get in touch and I'll tell you exactly what's recoverable.

Patchy signal.
Still fine.

01

Work with whatever you can send

Voice note at 2am, blurry photo of a payslip, one bar of signal in a marina — I adapt to you. No need to be ashore, organised, or formal.

02

I've worked this world

Superyachts, irregular income, contracts that don't fit the standard forms — I understand the life because I've lived it. Nothing surprises me.

03

Fixed price, no surprises

You get a clear quote upfront. No hourly billing, no hidden extras. You know exactly what you're paying before we start.

04

HMRC agent from day one

I deal with HMRC directly on your behalf. You don't need to speak to them, write to them, or understand their letters. That's my job.

More than just
a return.

There's usually more money on the table than just the SED.

01

National Insurance credits

Years at sea can leave gaps in your NI record — affecting your state pension. We can often backdate voluntary contributions.

02

Multiple income sources

Rotational contracts, land-based work, freelance — we handle all income streams in one return. No juggling between accountants.

03

Catch-up years

Never filed? Filed but never claimed SED? Up to four years of refunds may still be available. Worth checking every time.

Residency questions

Time at sea can blur the lines of UK tax residency. I'll check your status before we file anything — no nasty surprises.

Things crew ask.

Usually yes — yachts count as ships under SED rules as long as one qualifying voyage starts or ends outside the UK each year. I'll check your specific situation before we file anything.
Yes. HMRC requires a return from anyone registered in their system. Miss the deadline and it's an automatic £100 fine — even with a zero bill.
Rarely — HMRC allows amendments going back four years. Every year you wait is a potential refund you're not collecting. Get in touch and I'll tell you exactly what's recoverable.
WhatsApp, voice note, a blurry photo of a payslip — whatever you can manage. I'm used to working with whatever connection you've got. No need to be ashore.
Just drop me a WhatsApp. Tell me roughly where you're at — how many years you've been at sea, whether you've ever filed, whether you've claimed the SED. I'll tell you what's possible. No charge for that conversation.
